Lots of hope.

That’s how I feel when I enter the International Print Competition…and also some blind faith.  When I enter, I try to predict what the judges are looking for in style, mood, type of subject, and current trends.  Judging is always subjective, and I feel like I am releasing baby birds that are going for their first flight.  Will they make it?  Will they reach unbelievable heights?  Will the judges love their beauty as much as I do?
Regardless of how they fare in competition, I am always glad I entered.  Competing in print competition causes me to pause and really dig in on my images.  I examine the story they are telling, emotional impact, connection with the viewer, and analyze every tiny detail.  This reflection makes me a better photographer by both rejoicing in the beautiful clients I get to photograph, as well as identifying strengths and opportunities for improvement.

This year, print competition provided this valuable growth as it does every year…and also some WINS.  I had two images make it to the final rounds in their respective categories, beating out thousands of entries.  My children/teens category entry made it to the TOP 32, and my family entry made it to the TOP 8.  Thousands of images entered by talented artists, and I had two images recognized.  They weren’t concept shoots, they weren’t professional models, they weren’t sessions specifically for print comp.  They were real life people, real life families, capturing their love and legacy at that moment in time.
